There are many types of batteries used in Electric vehicles. These include lead-acid batteries, nickel metal hydride and lithium ion batteries. Lead-acid batteries Lead-acid batteries are the oldest type of battery and they were used in cars until the 1970s when they were replaced by nickel metal hydride batteries which had a higher energy density than lead-acid. Lead-acid batteries are the oldest type of battery, dating back to 1859 when French scientist Gaston Planté invented them. These batteries use lead plates as electrodes and sulfuric acid as electrolyte. The plates are made from lead or lead oxide, which is a soft, malleable substance that can be molded into shapes with high electrical resistivity (the ability to store electricity). This makes it possible for the plates to be shaped into small cylindrical shapes called cells or modules.
